Some people do tend to have a greater tendency towards constipation than others, and emotions do definitely affect the bowel by affecting the contractibility of the gut. Bloating is when your belly feels swollen after eating. It is usually caused by excess gas production or disturbances in the movement of the muscles of the digestive system
If you are finding that fruit and vegetables don’t seem to help, you should also take a look at how much fibre you are eating in the way of wholewheat products. Whole grains contain a higher proportion of the bulky insoluble type of fibre than fruits and vegetables, and it is this type that is best at preventing constipation as it absorbs several times its own weight in water.
Constipation, Bloated Belly Causes and Treatment
Many people who have an otherwise healthy diet, but are troubled by constipation find that they need to do nothing other than introduce a bowl of whole wheat cereal such as All Bran, bran flakes or Shredded Wheat at breakfast time in order to improve their bowel function. If you find this also helps you, be sure to keep it up during your holidays. If that means packing some cereal in your suitcase, then do it!
It’s also vitally important to increase your fluid intake in parallel with your fibre intake. Without sufficient water, all the extra fibre will just clog up the gut even more, so be sure to drink at least eight glasses a day – more in a hot climate. If your bowel functions change suddenly you should see a GP to rule out bowel disease.
